I painted my first painting in 1974, it took until 1988 to paint the second. I was a sculptor in college and after that, interested in animation and drawing. I composed drawings by copying pictures I took or had found in magazines and books. I drew with oil pastels, liking the physicality of drawing; holding the color in my hand as opposed to holding a brush when painting. The pieces looked more like paintings than drawings so I switched from drawing on paper to canvas. The canvas needed an acrylic ground before drawing with pastels, so I had to paint that. Once I had a brush in my hand I was inevitably drawn toward painting. It was a gradual transition though, as I mixed the two, drawing on one part of the canvas while learning to paint on the other.
